MIX: Forbidden Planets by Jesse Futerman

August 24th, 2010 written by jeej

Jesse Futerman, aka: your favourite artist’s favourite artist, has provided this week’s mix (number 148) for MondayJazz. His mix, Forbidden Planets, is an absolutely incredible 35-minute blend of the best jazz you probably never knew you’d love and a whole lot more. You can download the mix directly from the MondayJazz website, and you can also check out an amazing archive of mixes provided by many others on there too.

In the words of Jesse Futerman himself; “Forbidden Planets was honestly a labour of love for me. Whether it was taking snippets from the movie Forbidden Planet to ease transitions, or getting a chance to drop some of my favorite artists, it was a good time for all to be had. I’m gonna shut up and let the music speak for itself.”

MIX: Aug ’10 Mix for Jus Like Music by Railster

August 21st, 2010 written by jeej

August’s mix for Jus Like Music has been provided by Italian producer and DJ: Railster, and uploaded to Mixcloud. The experimental electronica/beat-head producer has caught ears recently with remixes and collaborations with artists like jerrell.james, AEED and Portformat – as well as a slew of highly popular mixes all over the web.

This experimental electronic mix contains bangers from Kappah, Swede:art, and Indigo Pyramid (to name a few!), but I’ll let Railster explain it all to you in his own words;

“It all started a few months ago when I began to ask for songs from my music producing friends to spice up the first choices for my playlist, and at the same time I was making a note of the most interesting songs that I was hearing.

Some weeks back I reordered all the material, but I couldn’t help but notice I was venturing far from the usual instrumental/experimental hip-hop material and moving towards more glo-fi / hypnagogic underground styles. At first I had a hard time blending all the different styles, so I took a step back and I slowly started to make logical connections from one song to the next until it sounded just right.

This mix also features some exclusive tunes from Kappah, DJ Shablo, Blessy, and (costa).

I would like to thank all my friends that I did not include in this mix, although I have listened to some great tracks. And also, a special thanks to; Reddarmy Records, the Astronautico Blogspot crew, Error Broadcast, Tokyo Dawn Records, Morpheground and Marco Acquaviva.”

Tone Trezure – My Destiny

August 9th, 2010 written by bug

Please allow me introduce you to Latonya “Tone Trezure” Givens! If you can’t recall the name, but the soulful vocals and slick production work sound familiar, and if your musical tastes are anything like mine, that may be because you have become familiar with her work through her writing and production on Bilal‘s Love for Sale project. Or, perhaps you have heard her features with Strange Fruit Project and on S1‘s fantastic Music Box album? No? Maybe you recognise her voice from Victory Is In My Clutches by Jay Electronica? After establishing credentials in the music game and accumulating a resume which boasts household names such as Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre and Erykah Badu, the phenomenally talented singer/songwriter/producer from Flint, Michigan prepares to step into the limelight with the release of her own 5-track EP entitled My Destiny.

My Destiny is one of the most impressive and inspiring efforts I have heard in a very long time and has basically owned my speakers for the last week! The entire project is written and produced by Tone Trezure herself, with the exception of some additional production work on the title-track courtesy of Josef Leimburgh, and Detroit legend Mr. Porter on Come With Me. All of the beats are bang on-point and complimented perfectly by Tone’s beautiful vocals, somewhat reminiscent of Georgia Anne Muldrow, fluctuating between asservations of gospel inspired spirituality, the smoothness and sexiness of classic RnB, and the independent street-consciousness of hip-hop revealing both the strengths and vulnerabilities of this incredibly dynamic singer-songwriter.

The EP possesses a cohesive classic post-90s US Soul feel throughout and manages to be artistic and inventive, whilst maintaining an honest and traditional musical approach in an age too often characterised by incoherent eclecticality and recherché experimentalism. I urge all fans of great music to support this fantastic project, which is available to buy for only $5 (just over £3) from Tone Trezure’s Bandcamp page!

GIG: Wbeezer & George FitzGerald @ Man Make Music, London

July 30th, 2010 written by jeej

Our good friends, Man Make Music, are hosting a FREE event on Saturday 7th August that is gonna blow a hole in the roof of The Star of Bethnal Green in East London. Two of the UK’s most sought after dance music makers will be the ones damaging the aforementioned roof! London’s own Wbeezer will be performing live with his fresh blend of Detroit style house, and fellow Londoner George FitzGerald will be DJing alongside Bruk and Man Make Music residents Sketchy and Another Amit.

Having been described as “one of the most exciting new artists to come out of the UK”, the young man Wbeezer has had heads turning at events like Secret Sundaze and also Sonar in Barcelona. With an EP release on the Third Ear Recordings label – the label who released Kyle Hall‘s ‘Must See EP’ – things are really starting to hot up for him. This is also likely to be one of the only intimate live sets from Wbeezer in London this summer – so don’t miss it!

And who better to have supporting Wbeezer than George FitzGerald?! An old friend of the Man Make Music crew and an artist signed to the well respected Hot Flush Recordings label, home to such luminaries as Mount Kimbie, Scuba, Distance, Boxcutter and Joy Orbison. His track, Painted Jezebel, was also present on the recent Brownswood Electr*c compilation from Gilles Peterson‘s Brownswood label.

This ultra-fresh blend of house, 2-step and dubstep stylings seems to be just what the UK scene needed – what with the recent triumphs from a diverse selection of producers, including; Floating Points, Joy Orbison, Mount Kimbie, Untold, Blue Daisy and Kyle Hall, to name a handful. These artists are pushing the boundaries of that ever-evolving beast; dance music. Transferred back into it’s rightful home, the club environment, not much comes close to it out in London venues right now. That slick blend of hypnotic melodies, driving beats and basslines ensures feet keep shuffling until the late, late hours become the early, early hours.

Don’t You!!? by George FitzGerald

Eric Lau & Friends – See & Under Standing (Reprise)

July 7th, 2010 written by jeej

You know what’s better than amazing music? Amazing music for a good cause. Jus Like Music favourite, Eric Lau, has struck that exact combination under the guise of Eric Lau & Friends and their release See & Under Standing (Reprise) – out now via Kilawatt Music to benefit Save The Children. And surprise, surprise an incredible producer has some incredible friends!; Rahel, Szjerdene, Fatima, Sarina Leah, Ben Jones, Akwasi Mensa, Finn Peters, Pauli Stan McKenzie and Floating Points.

This is a beautifully orchestrated neo-soul release that is organic sounding and rich in both soul and heart. Each of the artists adds their own signature style to the creations, and the blend between Eric Lau‘s production style and the accompanying instrumentation is simply awe inspiring. For just £2 you can not only own these brilliant tracks, but also help to make a difference to the lives of children who really do genuinely need your help. Do the right thing.
