OneTaste Festival 2009

5 rooms over 3 floors, all day and night – it can only be the OneTaste Festival! The above flyer tells you pretty much what you need to know, but essentially this will see 45 fantastic acts grace one festival, including workshops and other delightful bits of fun. It’s being hosted on Sunday 8th November at The Bedford in Balham, SW12 9HD – tickets are £10 advance and £12 on the door. For more information, and to book tickets, visit the OneTaste website.

One of the artists who will be performing at the OneTaste Festival is the brilliant Laura J Martin. Check out her remix of Alice Russell’s Lights Went Out, taken from the recent Pot Of Gold Remixes album…

GIG: Nneka UK Tour

Nneka UK Tour

Off the back of her latest album No Longer At Ease, MOBO award winning soul singer Nneka is embarking on a 5-date UK tour in November. As the flyer says; Nneka will be playing; London, Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool and Brighton – and in that order too!

Born in Nigeria, but with Germany as her home, Nneka has been causing quite a scene in the music world of late. Picking up fans like a giant snowball rolling down a mountain, she can even call Lauryn Hill a fan of her work. Nneka’s album, No Longer At Ease, is testament to a very diverse singer – channeling influences from blues, soul and afro sounds. It’s most definitely worth getting yourself along to one of these UK dates, presumably the one closest to you! Get it booked.

Hudson Mohawke – Butterstar Galactica

Bought the Hudson Mohawke debut, Butter, yet?! Perhaps this viral game, Butterstar Galactica, might help nudge you towards making your purchase! What time can you get?! I got over 5 minutes, which means I’m pretty crap, incase you didn’t know. It’s a cool game though!

Don’t forget to check out the review of Butter that Jules Hallam wrote for Jus Like Music the other week. And, as I said, Hudson Mohakwe’s Butter is out now and available through WARP Records.

FREE: Jaga Jazzist – One-Armed Bandit

Jaga Jazzist - One-Armed Bandit

Norway’s Jaga Jazzist are back with their first fresh material since 2005’s What We Must. Taken from the upcoming album of the same name, One-Armed Bandit is being given away for free by those kind people at Ninja Tune. The album is officially due out on 25th January, and if this first taster is anything to go by, then it’s gonna be bloody amazing!

The track, One-Armed Bandit, dances along a fine balance between retro and futuristic jazz sounds, but naturally it is delivered in the present. Subtle electronic sounds, and that trademark Jaga Jazzist song build-up style, makes for rich results indeed. There’s no doubting the class of both the production and the instrumentation of Jaga Jazzist. I was only wondering just the other day, “whatever happened to Jaga Jazzist?” and now I guess I can stop wondering.

RADIO: Jus Like Music Radio Show 004

October 26th, 2009 written by jeej

Catch the fourth episode of the Jus Like Music radio show on Laid Back Radio this week. Check the schedule to see when you can listen to it, otherwise listen at your own leisure via Mixcloud.

For this week’s edition of the Jus Like Music show I kicked things off by bringing back together the team who made up the Heralds Of Change; Hudson Mohawke and Mike Slott. Things then move into slightly more hip-hop-like territory via tracks from Obba Supa, Devenwho, Phat Kat and J Dilla.

I’ve also included new material from fLako, Sam Champion (with Kissey Asplund), James Pants and Shlohmo. Not to focus too heavily on new material, I’ve also picked a couple of classic tracks from Barry Biggs and Lee Fields, respectively. There’s then a special appearance from a certain artist through the medium of a voicemail message, before finishing up with a couple of choice selections from the Futuristica Music label and a beautiful jazz track from American songstress Nailah.

Tracklisting:

01. Hudson Mohawke – No One Could Ever
02. Mike Slott – 23 Halfs
03. Zomby – Expert Tuition
