RBMA: Introducing Red Bull Music Academy 2010

January 29th, 2010 written by jeej

The Red Bull Music Academy is in London for 2010. It will run from 7th February to 12th March and will include a plethora of lectures, workshops and nights in and around London. RBMA has been in existence for an incredible 12 years now and has served as an extremely valuable tool, and stepping stone, for many talented people – Tea Leaf Dancers by Flying Lotus, featuring Andreya Triana, was a byproduct of RBMA 2006 in Australia, for example.

Alas, this year has an extremely exciting roster of candidates, including (but not limited to!); Amenta, Lunice, Cohoba, Swede:art, Manzilla (Electric Wire Hustle), Kidkanevil, Illum Sphere, Tokimonsta and 00Genesis. The following will also be performing at selected events; Andy C, Bugge Wesstletoft, Charlie Dark, Clark, David Rodigan, DJ Food, Flying Lotus, Goldie, Hudson Mohawke, James Pants, Ramadanman, Roots Manuva and The Scientist. With an almost embarrassing array of artists, this year is gonna be bigger than ever!

Jus Like Music will covering RBMA 2010 in detail. We will be attending some of the lectures and the planned nights, as well as conducting interviews with some of the candidates. We will also be providing video footage from the academy whenever possible. If you’re not too familiar with RBMA, or haven’t witnessed one of the fabled lectures, then check out this short version of Domu’s lecture from RBMA 2004 in Rome…

For an archive crammed with the full versions of LOADS of these lectures, check out the Red Bull Music Academy website. If you have time on your hands to watch the full videos, I would particularly recommend Cut Chemist and Hymnal and also Madlib – but there are so many amazing videos archived there that you could lose whole days at a time!

So, stay tuned for the full lowdown on RBMA 2010 in London!

GIG: Tomorroww @ Market Place, LDN

Only one place to be in London tonight (Sat 23rd Jan), and that’s Market Place in W1 for Budgie and Eric Lau’s Tomorroww night. Tonight they have a very special guest in the form of the one and only Floating Points! So the line-up will see Floating Points (Eglo), Budgie (Honest Jon’s/Livin’ Proof), Eric Lau (Ubiquity Records/Pause) and Juven (Pause), a stellar line-up if ever I saw one.

It all kicks off at 8pm and is absolutely FREE! So, for the finest in 80s funk, boogie and modern soul (and no doubt plenty of surprises between!), get yourself down to Market Place.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. Budgie and Eric Lau are giving away some mixes in support of their night…

Mixcloud Best of 2009

January 23rd, 2010 written by jeej

As mentioned last week, Mixcloud had a vote open to decide on the Mixcloud Best of 2009, which included Best Cloudcasts, Best Cloudcasters and Best Listeners. Well, the fantastic news is that Laid Back Radio won Best Cloudcaster! In the words of Mixcloud…

“Badass funky music wouldn’t necessarily be the first thing you would associate with Brussels, but Laid Back radio is doing it’s upmost to change that. Broadcast every Wednesday on FM Brussel as well as online through their extensive magazine website, Laid Back brings the best in urban music from the last forty years, nonstop. We <3 Laid Back!”

Naturally I’m delighted that Laid Back won, especially as I provide one of their regular shows. But, a big congrats must go out to the Laid Back team and everyone who has been involved, from art to design to actually hosting fantastic shows like Little Miss Sunshiine, Royal Groove and Soul Food. Nice work!

And to all those who voted for Laid Back…
