Attack of The Bits & Pieces

It’s nearly July already – where does the time go?! Anyway, some news snippets and cynical comments from yours truly today, I guess. I’ll mix it up a bit by chucking in a few recommendations too…

Grandaddy‘s Jason Lytle is going on a solo tour, performing tracks from the bands’ farewell album Just Like The Fambly Cat. It will be an acoustic tour spanning 13 dates across America. The dates run from 18th July to the 12th August.

Claydes ‘Charles’ Smith, the co-founder of soul group Kool & The Gang has sadly passed away aged 57 in New Jersey. His long suffering illness had forced him to stop touring in January of this year, although the details of his death are currently not clear. RIP.

JJ72 are to split. The group cite record company issues as the reasoning. So, 11 years they were together – they went from unknowns to cult indie-rock underground legends. They were definitely a love them or hate them kind of band, but now are no more. Apparently singer Mark Greaney is working on a new project, but no news from the other two members.

Smile the new track from Lily Allen is available to purchase on iTunes UK as of today. So, if you like it, you want it, go get it.

Uh oh, here comes the cynical bit, and once more it is aimed Gnarls “gimme all your money” Barkley. What the fook is up with buying music videos off iTunes?! Do people really do this? I guess if you have more money than sense and one of those fancy iPods that does the videos, then good for you. But seriously, how long is it gonna be before I get a MySpace bulletin from Gnarls Barkley telling me I can now buy Gnarls Barkley underpants? These guys don’t miss a trick.

Like Boards Of Canada? Maybe you’ll like The Tilted Head Of Compassion, an electronica group from sunny Greenland. Check them out here… http://www.myspace.com/thetiltedheadofcompassion

Don’t forget that the Cadence album Creative Commerce is out now on Domination Recordings. I posted up a review the other day, you can read it here – quality chilled hip-hop, the way it’s meant to be.  If you liked the Raw Produce album The Feeling of Now, you’ll love this.  It’s generally gonna be loved by anyone who likes the more chilled, soulful, laid-back, hip-hop.  Don’t miss it!

I’ll finish up by sharing a trip-hop track by a chap I know by the name of Daniel Pate. The track is called Remember Me and got A LOT of plays on my laptop last year. Check out the track here and Dan’s MySpace page here.

howdy gav, what’s up with the gnarls barkley dis? it’s not like they’re the only ones with videos on itunes. i don’t think there’s anything wrong with making money, and in this day and age you conform to the consumers’ wants. ask any starving artist whether they’d like to have a video on itunes. it’s not like i need a vanilla-pistachio shake with sprinkles on top, but i like it anyway, and it’s there for me to buy, so i buy it. oh and their videos are better than loads better than others out there, IMHO. if idiots buying the video let cee-lo buy the aston martin he always dreamed of, hurrah.

anyway you can probably find the video for free too, mind – people with fancy ipods =D

I’m just sick of having it all rammed down my throat. Gnarls Barkley was an example, they’re all as bad as each other. Freakin’ Black Eyed Peas have their own version of the Honda Civic car, a car!!!

You know what they say; money talks – aint that the truth. It’s just a sad situation where the rich get richer and the unknowns just keep trying. Don’t get me wrong, Dangermouse and Cee-Lo weren’t born popular and rich, but they’ve had their fair share of the cake. When I get their bulletins and emails I really hope sometimes they will say “please check out this artist”, but it’s just “us, us, us!”.

Obviously it is a consumers world, but it doesn’t mean I like it.

that’s not what i meant actually. i mean artistic integrity is a very subjective matter and a starving artist would much rather have more pies. being in it for the music is a given, and i’m happy that gnarls barkley can make money in a world where shit acts like the (contemporary) black eyed peas do too. it balances things out.

It’s not really for me to state what is right or wrong or how artists should lead their careers, as you say, such things are subjective – however, I’m merely stating, that from a personal point of view, I don’t approve of their conduct. Regardless they’ll continue to do what they want, and that is only natural. But it would be nice for the guys at the top to stop trying to sell me their stuff for the billionth time and perhaps share some of that limelight. Doubt anybody knows better than Dangermouse and Cee-Lo how hard it is to break through in the industry, so you’d think they’d understand.

All art is subjective though, and although I would agree that Gnarls Barkley is far better than BEP, I clearly don’t like Gnarls as much as you. Maybe it’s cos I’m crazy? :-P
