i-Robot / u-Facists

This is a strange tale, some of you hardcore hip-hop heads will know it, but I should imagine most wont, so here it goes…

Meet Asamov, or should I say The AB’s? Last year the hip-hop foursome from Florida known as Asamov took the underground by storm. I first heard about these guys via the wonderful IndieFeed Hip Hop podcast (see the sidebar of this page for the feed URL) – the unique thing about this quartet is that they all share both the emceeing and the DJing responsibilities. To describe the sound of Asamov, I’d say they’re laid back, but still seriously banging. Like they’ve got that chilled thing going on, think; J5, Blackalicious, etc… – but they keep it gritty, they’ve found a balance. But more importantly, the vocals just flow so slick – I don’t think I’ve heard that many emcees rip it up so good on the same tracks since the early J5 stuff.

So, the name change. Just as things were starting to get seriously big for the guys, the bomb drops, but it isn’t them that dropped this bomb, it’s someone else. The Estate of Isaac Asimov (author of i-Robot) decides that the name ‘Asamov’ is too similar to the name of the author. A cease and desist order hit their label back in January, the estate of Asimov claimed the group were depreciating the value of the Asimov name. They felt these fine young rappers were using the name Asamov for financial gain. Basically their label, Caroline, had a freeze on anything being sent out for three months! Now the guys have till September to totally phase out the name Asamov and change it to The AB’s.

Most claim this is ridiculous, especially since it is a different spelling, but Asimov’s estate didn’t feel that way, and the guys just didn’t have the finances to fight it, so there was to be only one outcome; a name change. Look at it this way, if you have an original press of the album And Now by Asamov, then that’s gonna be pretty damn rare! All new presses will be under the name The AB’s – so that Asamov stuff could be worth a few green-backs one day!

It’s shocking really that a relatively unknown group would be treated this way. When it happened to Smiff N Wessun, they were pretty big and already had a few releases under them, but just as Asamov were really getting the wheels moving… they got hit by this. Still, as well as the earlier stuff now becoming rare, they can use this story to gain more publicity – I mean look at this blog entry for example!

Anyway, whether it has Asamov or The AB’s written on the front of it, make sure you check out the album And Now.

Oooh, I like “standing room only“. It reminds me of jurassic five and blackilious. I’m trying to decide whether the pronunciation of Asamov and Asimov differs or not…

When said fast, I doubt it does sound different.

I actually saw Asimov at the Voodoo Club in downtown Jacksonville about 3 years ago. I was actually there to see Killah Priest. Killah Priest was good, I wish I could say the same for Asimov. It seems that they have a different line up compared to when I saw them three years ago. When I saw them they were passing out Capri Sun’s with Asimov on them instead of Capri Sun. They also had a song with whistles I believee. Maybe their sound changed since I last saw them, I wouldn’t know. I didn’t feel that they were pushing me away, I was just pulling me closer to myself.

I appreciate a comment from someone that’s seen them live, thanks. :-)

I wonder how much they’ve changed? Maybe you could give the two tracks I uploaded a listen, and let me know what you think?

    Thanks.

Interesting story. Sounds like a bad case of a group of bored lawyers! “My my, we’re getting paid all this money and haven’t done much recently.” But fair play to Isaac Asimov’s suits, they know their hip-hop – One hardly stumbles on Asamov in Woolworths.
