Jamie T

That's a name I've been reading a lot on the world-wide-web these past few weeks. Ordinarily I'd have made it my duty to delve deeper, but I just didn't find the time. Then just yesterday I read an article on Linda's blog about him – if Linda says he's worth checking out, then he's worth checking out.

So, Jamie T, who is he? Imagine a cross between Arctic Monkeys and Mike Skinner, but a good version, then add a pinch of Lily Allen and a whole load of funky attitude. I've said it before, I hate making comparisons, cos quite often they don't do the artist any justice what-so-ever. Jamie T is 20 years of age and he is from London. He himself has described his sound as being experimental and says "I'll throw things in that sound like The Clash, or The Specials and then put something that is totally other end of the scale like Wu-Tang Clan type stuff." If we're talking genres, then the list could get long, but mainly I'd mention punk, reggae, rock, rap, pop… whatever.

Jamie T seems to be another one of these new alternative-pop kind of artists. Pretty easy to listen to and definitely consisting of music from many genres. Perhaps calling these artists alternative-pop is as ignorant as calling Seu Jorge and Nitin Sawhney world-music, in fact, I think it is – but for the sake of print and communication… what do we label them? Well I guess we shouldn't label artists, or compare them to others. We should just listen to the music and see what we think, but let's be honest, there's only so many hours in a day. So, unless you can think of something better, we'll call Jamie T, Lily Allen, Gotye, etc… etc… alternative-pop.

His new single Sheila is out on 3rd July, and he's also just finished making his debut album – that should be out shortly, but is so far nameless. I have a demo (so quality isn't brilliant) of Sheila and being the generous chap that I am, I'll share it with you…

Sheila's probably one of the best track's I've heard from Jamie T – kicking beat, clever rhymes and catchy samples. You can also watch the video here. It's a pretty amusing video too.

There's a few more tracks you can catch on Jamie T's MySpace page as well. You can also find upcoming gig details on that page too – coming shortly are appearances in Oxford, Southampton, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol, London, and Brighton… pretty much in that order! Someone you might spot on his MySpace friends list is none other than Lily Allen – rumour has it that she appears on one of the tracks on the upcoming Jamie T album, so look out for that.

So basically, if you like your music with a twist of punk and humour, definitely take the time out to check this fella. Don't set your mind after hearing one track either – his music can sound a bit different from track to track. Oh, you've twisted my arm, here's another track (again, sorry for the quality, it's a demo)…

There are quite a few Jamie T demos floating around on the web, so worth having a search – but I'm eagerly anticipating the full debut album release. Once I've got and heard that, I'll no doubt do a review. Would be good to hear from anyone that has seen him play live – I understand that it's generally just him and an acoustic guitar.

He’s certainly a good’n! No date for an album release yet, as Jamie casually put it; “when it’s finished.”

    Most think this year though.
