NEWS: Japanese Producer Nujabes Dies
It is with great sadness that I have to report the untimely passing of legendary Japanese hip-hop producer Nujabes. At the young age of 36 years old, Jun Seba (AKA Nujabes) was taken from us after a tragic traffic accident in Japan on 26th February this year. An extremely private individual, rarely giving interviews, it’s almost no surprise that this awful news has only just now surfaced. A private funeral was held by his family in Shimeyaka.
I can honestly say that there are not many hip-hop producers around in this day that can give me goosebumps with their production. But, Nujabes was one of them. Such raw emotion in his work, often combining soulful jazz tones with hard hitting beats. A generally withdrawn character, I felt he communicated exquisitely with his music – beautiful, considered arrangements and compositions, above and beyond the comprehension of many of his contemporaries. In this sense he almost led a sub-genre of his own.
The label which he ran, Hydeout Productions, have said that they will honour his legacy by releasing the tracks he had yet to release himself. As much as Nujabes did have a bit of hardcore following, I am also aware that many will not be so familiar with his work. It’s with this in mind that I hope people will seek out his music and come to love it as much as I do.
You’ll be sorely missed, Nujabes. R.I.P.
