Oh it just gets better!

Remember I told you the other day bout Banksy’s Paris Hilton stunt? Well it turns out (and somehow I initially missed this detail) that even the contents of the actual CD were changed. And these ‘remixes’ were done by none other than Danger Mouse! Check out this video on YouTube of the actual stunt in preparation and then action. I’m gonna try and get hold of some of these remixes.

To turn the subject to a totally different matter now… I cant honestly tell you what sort of demographic reads my blog, but I’ll make a bold guess and say it’s mainly males aged between 16 and 30. So, that’s still a good range of 14 years, which may mean my next comments make less or more sense to you, dependent on your age etc… By absolute chance I was listening to a greatest hits of Elton John CD the other day. Now ordinarily I’d say I don’t mind Elton, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to his stuff – but like very few artists, he’s been recording over a loooooong period of time and has been very successful. Imagine my surprise when I actually find myself really enjoying a couple of his old tracks.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of Elton John stuff that I’d gladly never listen to, and probably wont make an effort to – but I’m more than happy to have discovered at least a couple of tracks that I do like. At the end of the day, good music is good music, and so I announce to you that I do indeed like Bennie And The Jets, what a fantastic song. Thing is, and please bear in mind that I was born in ’83, this reminds me a bit of Badly Drawn Boy, although naturally I should be saying that Badly Drawn Boy reminds me of Elton John – but let’s blame my apparent ignorance (or naivety) on my age. So regardless of age, tastes, and what-not, why not enjoy this 1973 classic…

The rest of the Elton stuff after the 70s really doesn’t do anything for me, reeks of pop from the 80s and just seems cheesy. I’m also quite keen on the 1969 track Your Song too…

I’m well aware that my selection of Elton John tracks is based on my memory of his most memorable hits and also my listening to a greatest hits CD – so I know from my current limited knowledge that I seem to prefer his stuff from the late 60s/early 70s. If I find the time I may just have a root around for some more Elton John tracks from around those dates, just to see if I’ve missed out on any other gems. But basically, most of his stuff is pretty mediocre and probably best remembered by the people that experienced it when it first came out. Period pop is always a delicate thing! Give those two above tracks a listen though, try to keep an open mind, and just see what you think. My sincere apologies to any Elton connoisseurs or ‘older’ readers that found my account at all patronising.

In closing, some words from Arctic Monkeys member Alex Turner, upon receiving the 2006 Mercury Prize: “Somebody call 999, Richard Hawley’s been robbed! Thanks to everyone that’s helped us. Normally it (the award) doesn’t go to a band that’s sold so many records, to put it bluntly, but we’re pleased. They’re good tunes, that’s what we do and there aren’t any tricks, people are trying to do too many tricks.”

I heard about the Banksy stunt but I didn’t hear anything about the remixes being done by Danger Mouse. I read the remixes were Banksy’s own. I’m really wondering whose they are now.

My absolute fave Elton choon is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Keane did a pretty good version with Faultline on last year’s Help compilation.

Speaking of Faultline, have you heard any of their stuff? Your Love Means Everything is an incredible album…
