PREVIEW: Gil Scott-Heron – I’m New Here

In what I can only describe as the best use of video on a music related website since Kutiman’s Thru You project, the preview to Gil Scott-Heron‘s new album I’m New Here is simply fantastic! Check out the website in question here. As the site says, I’m New Here is due out in early 2010 on XL Recordings and is a collection of tracks Gil Scott-Heron has been working on for the past couple of years. Featured on this taster site are the tracks; A.M., I’m New Here, Me And The Devil and I’ll Take Care Of You.
That’s all I can really tell you at the moment, but I just had to share it. Make sure you listen/watch the whole thing to get all the snippets of the new material – I’m particularly feeling the track Me And The Devil, really heavy track! But for now, enjoy a classic…

have to say i’m really disappointed, but i have been disappointed by most of his post-1981 releases. i love this guy’s music he made with brian jackson, that’s what made gil my favourite artist – ever! his voice sounds not so good on this one, but what really troubles me is the production. maybe some of the stones throw guys should work with him.
I would say, in contrast, I’m approaching this new material as something entirely new (which in a sense it is), rather than comparing it to older material. Naturally Gil is now an older man, hence his voice sounding different to in his prime – as for the production, perhaps it is too much to scrutinise it too hard after hearing it off a streaming video, not quite lossless quality is it?
However, I remain optimistic that this could indeed be a decent record. We’ll find out next year.
I have been a fan of GSH since the beginning of his career. Granted his voice does sound different than it did in the earlier days. But, when you consider all that he has been through and is currently dealing with-it is good just to know that he has focused his creative energy into creating music again.
I'm really excited about this release!!! Gils last album 'Spirits' along side 'The Revolution Will not be Televised' is my favourite album. I look forward to getting my hands on this new release which XLs website says will be released the 11th of January 2010.
