Track of the Week

Got that Friday feeling? You should have… it’s Friday. So, track of the week time. These Australian fellas blew your headphones a few years back with an album called Since I Left You, they’ve since remixed a lot of stuff, changed some personnel, upset some Jamiroquai fans, and supposedly have a new album coming out some time in the near future. But, unless you are more than an avid fan, the chances are you wont have ever heard this track…

This is a rare track from way before that famous album Since I Left You, but if you remotely liked that album, then you’ll love Run DNA – it’s one of my most played tracks ever. Experimental hip-hop at its finest, learn those lyrics quick sharp you rastclarts! Oh and play it loud!

Wondering what The Avalanches did to upset the Jamiroquai fans? Well, apparently they were opening for him last year on the Sydney leg of his Australian tour, so they come out and do their thing – only with 17 minutes into the proposed 2 hour set, the Jamiroquai fans got a bit bored and restless. The boys get Mentos thrown at them, so left the stage. Still, something to tell the grand-kids.

    Who the f*ck throws Mentos at The Avalanches?! And why did the crowd have a sufficient amount of Mentos to be thrown in the first place? Is is an Aussie thing?

    lol at the beef between the avalanches and Jamiroquai, but all that aside i really like both artists. ‘Since I Left You’ is just brilliant, I hope they do more work in the future I remember there was some great scratching and sampling on ‘Frontier Psychologist’.

    Ah no, don’t misunderstand. The beef was between the Jamiroquai fans at the Sydney show and The Avalanches, although up until receiving Mentos to the face, the guys had no problems with those fans! Jamiroquai himself must’ve liked The Avalanches for them to be there in the first place.

    Sadly mate, the reason Frontier Pyschiatrist had such great scratching (and maybe samples) was because of DJ Dexta, who left the group some time ago. I understand the new album uses lots of old rock samples and even calypso samples, so it could be crap… or amazing, we shall see.

    Oh man,
    thanks for giving the early Avalanches stuff some play. This EP blew my mind when it came out – 1997 was a long way before the mashup aesthetic had blown up and the cheesy flute sample slapped against screaming guitars was a joy. Every track is a killer on that EP but i personally love the chorus from “Rock City” – “cocaine, limousines, woooo, that’s rock city!”
    Awesome, I’m getting all misty eyed and retrospective.
    But if you want rare – try and get a hold of the mix tape they did pre-release of “Since I Left You” – it has most of the trax on the album with heaps of uncleared samples. My fave – “Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” mixed with the flute line from “Jayou”. Sweet.

    I don’t even have ALL the tracks from EL Producto, in fact I think it’s basically Rap Fever and Run DNA, oh and also Undersea Community.

    I understand there was a mixtape called Gimix, is that the one you are referring to?

    No idea what the name of the tape was – it just had the dodgy avalanches logo that used to be on their 12″. My mate got it as a promo from the record shop he works at.
    They did a BBC Breezeblock set that used most of the same tracks.
    I don’t know what the Gimix is – but you got me curious!

    Yeah I believe Gimix was a series of mixtapes by The Avalanches – had a real diverse track listing. Give it a search, the guys on the official Avalanches forum are usually pretty knowledgable.
