Track of the Week
Have you seen the film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou? Well you should have. Definitely one of my favourite films anyway, and stars the mighty Bill Murray. But… it also features a lot of acoustic music with singing in Portuguese. That was Seu Jorge, he played the part of Pelé dos Santos in The Life Aquatic, the ship’s safety man, but mainly all he did in the film was sing songs. But the special thing about these songs was the fact he was playing acoustic versions of David Bowie tracks… in Portuguese – Seu Jorge’s native tongue (he is Brazilian). David Bowie himself was quoted to have said; “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs acoustically in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.” So, here is one of those tracks…

Originally some of the tracks could only be heard on the film itself, or the film’s accompanying soundtrack. But then last year an album was released that contained all of the Seu Jorge ‘Bowie’ covers, called; The Life Aquatic – Studio Sessions featuring Seu Jorge, and this is available to buy from most retailers.
Seu Jorge is definitely an interesting character, a famed singer/songwriter back in his home country of Brazil and also an actor. He played the part of Knockout Ned in one of my other favourite films; City Of God. But as David Bowie said, Seu has managed to find further beauty in these covers and very much made them his own. I would highly recommend any acoustic fans to purchase this album, it’s beautiful.
